Furniture maker and artist Christina Boy’s talk will start at 3:00 PM. Boy, who created the distinctive, large-scale custom pieces for the tasting room will give an intimate talk about her artistic journey, her creative process, and the rewarding challenge of crafting the site-specific works that define the space.

Boy’s path as a creator was sparked by an early fascination with Bauhaus and Scandinavian design, which led her to formally study furniture making and craft. After attending Virginia Commonwealth University’s acclaimed Craft and Material Studies program and completing a prestigious two-year fellowship at the Penland School of Craft, she returned to Virginia to establish her studio here in Madison.

In her talk, Boy will discuss how her work balances the Bauhaus philosophy of “less is more” with the inspiration she draws from her rural environment. She will share how the textures, patterns, and colors of the Madison landscape—from fields in precise rows to the weathered patina on old farm buildings—are translated into the compelling use of texture and layered color in her furniture. She will also offer insight into her hands-on studio process, which involves using a bandsaw to carve shapes and applying layers of milk paint that are then sanded back to create visual depth.

The discussion will also focus on the unique experience of creating the collection of tables and furniture for Revalation Vineyards, a project that stretched her studio’s capabilities and offered new creative challenges.

“With all the stuff being made and so much clutter out in the world, I find it important to make things that people can connect with,” states Boy. “I try to add some fun or playful aspects into each piece I make, and when the viewer sees it, it brings them joy, which I love seeing in return.”
